03 ANIMISM IN PRACTICE - (what is ceremony and how do we recover it?)

What is ceremony and how do we recover it? There is not one single answer to this question, - I would say that ceremony or ritual are basically technologies to manage subjectivity that inhabits relation. But ceremony has so many different aspects and somany different kinds of ritual - some kinds are perfomances – Like the Yulegoat procession in Copenhagen or a Heilung concert. They shape relation by the way they show or represent something- some kinds of ritual are based on handling the megin, the immanent acting in stuff- these kinds of ritual typically don’t lean into performance – placing an elder twig in the stable to protect it. The point is not the representation going on there. It is the handling of the megin in the elder twig. And many of this kind of rituals have a hard time if they become performance – that risks undermining what they are doing. Some rituals are as simple as saying “bless you” when somebody sneezes, but a ritual can also be weeks of complex technology.
